Friday, 12 August, 2022 – It is a little after 6:00pm here in St. Paul, which means it is a little after 1:00am in Arles. E said he was going to be working late tonight, helping in the restaurant. He has not posted pictures or texted, so I like to imagine that he has been working and enjoying himself all day, too much to want to send pictures. He likely did not even take pictures, if he was in the kitchen.
I also like to imagine that he is finishing up an evening’s work with a group of restaurant folks in the time-honored way that all restaurant workers seem to close out a night: sitting around drinking, eating, and talking.
All that is to say: I don’t have anything to report and because we are with our friends, we are going to eat dinner and enjoy ourselves, too. Left alone, I could probably write about how travel is changing E, shaping who he will be and how he will see the world.
That’s for another post. I will end today with a quote from my funny, smart, and clearly well-read sister’s email today, since she is reading these posts on a daily basis: “Did anyone from the farm warn E about the mosquitoes? He could have stocked up on repellent or mosquito netting for the nighttime (I noticed the windows were open at the house). Ah, well, such are the vagaries of traveling. I think Jane Austen said something witty about joy cannot be unalloyed on travels.”
Ah, well.
