Travels with E (Day 78)

Tuesday, 11 October, 2022 – Elias called David today to tell him about the best meal he has had on the trip, maybe ever. I know I said this recently but I am going to say it again: I am SO grateful for cell phones. Love of good food is something Elias takes so much joy in, and joyfully shares with David. It was wonderful to hear that tone in his voice, as he described what he ate, in detail.

The three of us laughed a little about how much more significant the food experiences are to Elias enjoying his travels, than any museum. As Elias said, for what it costs him to get into a museum, he could have a really nice meal. No disrespect to museums, I am just so happy Elias has figured out more about what he wants to do, what he cares about, instead of thinking about what he should do.

He posted lots of beautiful, amazing pictures today but I am going to confine my gallery to the images I can recognize and work on identifying the others for tomorrow’s post.

First, this is the place where he is staying in Salerno. Yes, holy crap. So nice. Here it is on a map:

What I am showing is where Elias is staying on Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, and where he went for dinner, Osteria dei Sapori. He took the train into the center of Salerno; apparently, the airbnb is in sort of a suburb, 4 kilometres away. He said there’s not many restaurants near where he is staying, though there are a couple of markets.

After spending the afternoon on the beach, he said he watched people fishing off the dock, starting about 5pm, hoping to catch dinner, presumably. Then he went to a restaurant where he was pretty sure his dinner had been caught earlier in the day. Here’s a link to the restaurant’s page on Yelp: Osteria dei Sapori.

In short, Elias enjoyed his meal enormously. I am not sure where he can get octopus here in the U.S. but it would be great if he tried to recreate this meal.
