Travels with E (Day 64)

Tuesday, 27 September, 2022 – No news from Elias today. He said he’d let me know if he started feeling really terrible so I hope he spent the day wandering the streets and eating well.

I located him on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi today. That is not helpful really, since Garibaldi is to Italy what George Washington is to the United States, and every other Italian street is Garibaldi Street. [I do not usually link to Wikipedia but I found the Garibaldi page interesting and pretty easy to read.]

I cannot screenshot the map or an image of the Venice streets due to the crappy internet connection at both the hotel where I am staying in Nashville and, the Tennessee State Library & Archives.

David commented today about my post yesterday, that I was preoccupied with accessibility since I am giving my talk about it tomorrow, related to the accessibility of the Kansas City Fed website. The truth is that I have been thinking about accessibility for a long time, and only now getting more comfortable talking about it, and writing about it. Since my sister was diagnosed with an AVM when she was 11 years old, I have carried around thoughts, feelings, questions, and not a small amount of rage about what being disabled means. It is complicated and I don’t need or want to dive into it right this minute. However, my seemingly recent preoccupation with accessibility is a long time in the making. And damnit, access to decent internet connection is another dimension of accessibility. Okay, so the hotel has shit WiFi. Annoying but livable. But the LIBRARY?! Seriously? That’s part of a library’s mission, to provide access when other organizations and agencies don’t.

That rant really has nothing to do with Elias in Venice. I will say, however, that Elias’s decent connection using his phone has made a big difference on his trip. It has meant we’ve been able to help him a few times because he could text. And all his careful planning was much easier because he could get online and make all the reservations he needed to.

Maybe tomorrow I will have some pictures of Venice to share. Ciao.
