Travels with E (Day 46)

Friday, 9 September, 2022 – Shabbat Shalom. It is Friday and the fact that we did not hear from Elias is probably a good sign. They go to London tomorrow, I think and may be enjoying their last evening in a house with their own kitchen, maybe for a while.

When I woke up this morning, my phone said Elias was in the city of Durham, 15 miles and a 30-minute bus (train?) ride south of Newcastle. It looks pretty and like a nice place to wander around. Maybe they visited the Oriental Museum, whose name is a little cringe-inducing to me but it could still be a good museum, right?

Other than guessing they went to Durham, I don’t have anything interesting to share about Elias’s travels today.

I do, however, have something interesting to share about Newcastle. I was looking at UK newspapers yesterday and ran across this article about a book of Carolyn Scott’s photography. I did not know her work but as soon as I saw the headline, I thought, “That is what I was trying to explain about that silly Elephant & Castle suburb.” Progress and development can be a good thing, but I like the idea of remembering where we came from. It was not so long ago that what is now shi-shi and high brow, looked like what Carolyn Scott captured.
