Friday, 14 October, 2022 – Elias left Salerno today and went to Orvieto, about 6 hours away by train, I think. It is a small city in Umbria and a wonderful place to visit. Elias heard us talk about it many times; I am pleased he is staying for a day or two.
Charming as Orvieto is, everyone I found who writes about it, online, is slightly obnoxious. I mean, just so excessively fawning. It is a more modest place, as I remember it, than all the rapturous praise the silly bloggers heap on it. Maybe because it is small and fairly unassuming, they are over the top? I don’t know. I had hoped to find a blog that described Orvieto as we experienced it: a place where people live, that also happens to have some nice things for tourists to see.
Here’s a picture from one of the blogs. It does not do justice to how pretty the city is, but it does convey how it feels perched on top of a mountain.

And here’s two maps, showing how far Elias traveled today and a link to Orvieto on the map.
