Travels with E (Day 88)

Friday, 21 October, 2022 – A second day in Monaco. Elias said he wanted to go see the F1 track while he was there, so I hope he was able to do that. Here’s a link to the Formula One site.

David and I leave Hawai’i tomorrow. I had a strange day today, which I pulled David into, whether he wanted to go there or not. I started feeling bad both about leaving, and about not being productive while I was here. We don’t live here and I really do want to go home. I miss lots of things (Monroe and Buster), people, and my routine. But I started feeling like I had not “done” anything I was supposed to do here. Honestly, I cannot enumerate the list of things I was supposed to have done. It sounds stupid and ungrateful, even as I write these words. Yet I know that feeling is what I was struggling with, earlier today. I exercised, but not enough. We ate, but I ate the wrong thing. We did not go to the museum, even though the tickets are free. I started reviewing the things I should have done – or need to do – at home and at work. Finally, we went to the beach and now we are going to dinner.

All of this is to say, I wonder if Elias is dealing with any of these feelings. He has been working so hard at school, working at his job at the restaurant, working, working, working. Has he felt like he should be “doing” something besides wandering around new places, eating, and spending money? I wonder if he has been afflicted with the same “I should be productive” malaise that I got, in one short week in Hawai’i?

Well, this post is more about me – and more revealing of me – than I am comfortable with. But in the interest of writing honestly, and for Elias and Annika to read at some point in the future, I am going to click “Publish.” Ack.

Before I do, I will post the one picture Elias sent recently. We are pretty sure it is sunset in Orvieto.
